GST Council will now charge three types of taxes on one popcorn

Today in this block we will tell you what new rules GST Council has made for tax. The government will now levy tax on popcorn in three ways. 5% GST will be levied on salted popcorn sold in the open, 12% on pre-packaged and 18% GST if sold with caramel. On the other hand, GST on fortified rice has been reduced from 12% to 5%. These decisions were taken in the 55th meeting of the GST Council held in Jaisalmer on Saturday. However, the decision to reduce tax on the much-awaited insurance policy was postponed for some more time due to the ongoing deadlock over inputs. The council has exempted gene therapy used in the treatment of cancer from tax. If the ACC block used in construction is made of more than 50% fly ash, then 12% GST will have to be paid instead of 18%. 18% GST will no longer be levied on the penalty charge levied by banks on home loan borrowers. Meanwhile, the Group of Ministers' recommendation to change the tax rate on 148 items was not placed before the Council. And Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman chaired this meeting.
